Lisa Tiersten, Professor (Barnard), specializes in the cultural history of modern France and Europe. She received her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and her Ph.D. from Yale University (1992). Her publications include Marianne in the Market: Envisioning Consumer Society in Fin-de-siècle France (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2001) and (with several co-authors) The Western Experience (New York: McGraw Hill, 2010). She is currently at work on a history of bankruptcy in Third Republic France and on a project on war and humanitarianism in late nineteenth-century Europe. Her research interests include comparative cultures of capitalism, empire, and war.
