A two-day symposium celebrating the 20th anniversary of the publication of Saidiya Hartman’s landmark work, Scenes of Subjection: Terror, Slavery, and Self-Making in Nineteenth-Century America. Join us as we consider the work’s impact within its intergenerational intellectual context, reflect upon the book’s impact; and theorize new possibilities for Black life and Black freedom in these perilous times.
